This is a perfect example of the kind of shit Dubya & his crew would pull if they had a political sandbox like the Northern Territory in this country. Theocratic conservatives will tend to show their true stripes once they have the leeway, and Howard is looking like a starving, rabid aardwolf right about now.

One can only hope that this will serve as a warning to people about what could happen here...or what's already happening. But that would require people cease reading about Paris Hilton and actually notice what's going outside of Hollywood.

The news from Australia is continually depressing/infuriating.

sadly, it's been a long time coming. in addition, there's an election coming, and howard's always run the race card.

That's what I keep hearing. It's scary, though, that it seems to keep him in office. While I heartily wish I could just get this thesis thing over with and get over there and do something to get involved, I realistically know that these kinds of actions do nothing but make for bad relations between aboriginal people and others.

I hate the whole patronizing "Great White Hope" bullshit that comes from all of this. It makes the work of those who actually want to do something twice as hard. It also makes me want to go read some Ayn Rand and remind myself again why I would never make a good "philanthropist."

what actually keeps howard in office (or has done, imo) is the fear he plays regarding mortages, income, and so forth. basically, it's fear mongering on the 'average person', really. the race card hasn't--or i tell myself, anyhow--ever actually won him anything, though he plays the guard in conjunction with the other. that way he looks like he is saving the average citizen from the threat of the other.

it's all really nasty, but the other option, the labor party, it's not better. they are, after all, supporting him on this one.
